Gamebred - Backyards to BMF
From humble beginnings as a troubled youth and infamous street fighter, doing backyard fights as “ponytail” along Kimbo Slice back in the day in Miami at the tender age of 19, Masvidal has since evolved into an elite MMA fighter. Masvidal has headlined in a number of major mixed martial arts organizations, including Bellator, Strikeforce, Sengoku, Bodog and now in the UFC. A product of the famous American Top Team ATT, he has worked diligently with his team to adapt and evolve throughout the years and become a complete mixed martial artist.
It was in 2019 that Masvidal really left his mark in the UFC, first by derailing Darren Till with precise boxing leading to a KO, then by landing what soon became an iconic 4-second flying knee that “baptized” and put Ben Askren to sleep. With these wins under his belt, Masvidal was invited to fight for the Baddest Mother Fucker (BMF) title in November of last year at Madison Square Garden for UFC 244.
This BMF fight against Nate Diaz was the biggest card of the year and drew a record number of spectators. It even got the attention of miami-native Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, one of the biggest movie stars in the world and former WWE Superstar. Masvidal was able to defeat Nate Diaz in devastating fashion, causing a doctor stoppage, which allowed him to be crowned the BMF in the UFC - the only time, a non UFC belt was worn by a fighter in the octagon.
After winning his BMF title Masvidal has been working as a brand ambassador with different companies including Vital Performance for supplements, cbdMD for recovery and cannibus based products as well as alcohol companies like Zignum. He also managed to launch his very own brand of mezcal called El Recuerdo.
Outside of the cage, Masvidal has successfully established his brand and capitalized on his success by using Youtube to tell his story and document his MMA journey. Using an extensive archive of old footage captured by Isaac Kensington aka Genghis Con Films, Masvidal has been able to tell his whole story from beginning to today. These videos showcase his training, daily life and charismatic personality, which has made Masvidal a fan favorite. His post-fight interviews with the media are legendary, playing into that Scarface Miami persona and dropping catch phrases like “super necessary” or “baptizing fools” that have spread throughout the world. His altercation with Leon Edwards backstage also led to the famous “3 piece and a soda” line.
On Saturday July 11, Masvidal will face welterweight rival Kamaru Usman at UFC 251 on Fight Island, for his first title shot. A fighter to the core, Masvidal took the fight on 6 days notice to save UFC 251. If he pulls off the W with this fight, not only will he unify the BMF title, he will also achieve his dream of a rich and successful career that will stand the test of time and doing it in his own unique way.
